Tales from the Gimli Hospital

Horror/Comedy, Canada 1988

Guy Maddin's film is the story of the jealousy and madness of two men in a battle for the attention of a young nurse. The film is based on the story of a grandmother. To cheer up her two young grandchildren, whose mother is dying in the modern hospital in Gimli, Manitoba, she tells them the story of the two men - "Einar" the lonely one, his friend "Gunnar" and the "angel" Snjofridur - who met long ago in the old Gimli hospital. The black and white film was shot on 16mm and plays with light and dark contrasts and techniques from silent and earlier sound films. The 4K restoration of the film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
